Amex card statements have no running balance column — only charges and credits — and print a reference number under each description. That reference sits on its own line and belongs to the transaction above it.
What to check afterwards
With no balance column there is nothing to reconcile against, so the arithmetic check cannot verify an Amex statement the way it verifies a chequing account. Compare the converted total against the statement's closing balance by hand.
