Amex card statements have no running balance column, only charges and credits, and print a reference number under each description. That reference sits on its own line and belongs to the transaction above it.

Amex prints a reference number on its own line under each description. It belongs to the transaction above it, not to a new one. Multi-card accounts also insert the card member's name as a heading, which splits the list into blocks that each need their own handling.
What to check afterwards
With no balance column there is nothing to reconcile against, so the arithmetic check cannot verify an Amex statement the way it verifies a chequing account. Compare the converted total against the statement's closing balance by hand.

The Statements and Activity section at americanexpress.com. Amex offers a date range download for recent activity alongside the cycle PDFs, so for the last few months you may not need to convert anything.

Why can the converter not verify an Amex statement?
There is no running balance column to reconcile against. On a checking statement each row's balance proves the row above it; a card statement has nothing equivalent. Total the charges yourself and compare against the figure the statement prints.
Does Amex offer CSV directly?
For recent activity, yes, through the date range download. The cycle statements are PDF only. If you need a specific closed cycle rather than a rolling window, convert the PDF.
